Gerald (Gerry) Leslie Mayfield, Jr., a long-time Greenwich resident, passed peacefully at Greenwich Hospital on November 19, 2024. His wife Dorothy had been by his side daily during his stay. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather with a cheerful disposition and always trying to make people smile. His grandchildren fondly remember his uplifting, fun spirit and cherish their memories of his wonderful clambakes.
Gerry was born in Shamrock, Texas, on October 1, 1935, spending his childhood in this small Texas panhandle town. He attended Oklahoma State University, earning undergraduate and master’s degrees in electrical engineering. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, Sigma Tau engineering fraternity, Eta Kappa Nu (the international honor society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), Phi Eta Sigma scholastic group, and Blue Key Honor Society.
At OSU he met his future wife of 68 years, Dorothy Ruth Gage. Gerry and Dorothy were married on August 26, 1956. After his matriculation, Gerry served as a lieutenant in the United States Air Force, where he worked on the Air-to-Air Atomic Missiles program.
After being honorably discharged from the Air Force, Gerry joined Labko Scientific where he worked on Space Satellite Instrumentation. He next joined AT&T and began his corporate journey, leading him and his family to move around the country until 1982, when he joined Greenwich Research Associates. Gerry would go on to work with the telecommunications consulting firm DMW Group, and as a Special Limited Partner with Accel Partners. Finally, Gerry was a founder of MJL & Co., a company that specialized in the formation of Strategic Alliance in the telecommunications industry.
After his retirement, Gerry helped with the early formation of “At-Home in Greenwich” and served on its board for many years.
In his life, Gerry enjoyed sailing, traveling, golfing, and appreciating fine wine, particularly French. He was a long-time member of the Second Congregational Church, Retired Men’s Association of Greenwich, and Greenwich Country Club.
Gerald is survived by his wife Dorothy, sons Gerald Leslie Mayfield III (Ashlee) and Michael Gage Mayfield (Amy), five grandchildren Addison (Matt), Kyle (Erin), Delaney, Hudson, John, and his great-grandson Bryce.
A celebration of life to be shared in the future.
