Born in New Rochelle, NY on January 30, 1945 to the late Elliott Harris Jr. and Dorthea Harris Pivar. Buzz graduated from New Rochelle High School and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Lafayette College in 1967. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
Buzz served as an officer in the United States Coast Guard from 1967-1970. He was a licensed professional engineer in NY and CT. Buzz’s professional career began at Cauldwell – Wingate Construction Co. from 1970 – 1971. From 1971 – 1978 Buzz worked for Merritt & Harris Inc. in New York City as a consultant engineer and Senior VP; in 1978 he became owner, President & CEO until 1996. In 1997 Buzz founded Harris Consulting Inc. in Riverside, CT. Buzz also enjoyed being an adjunct assistant professor at NYU Real Estate School of Continuing Education.
A resident of Greenwich, CT for 41 years he was actively involved in the community. He coached OGRCC soccer, baseball and softball for 14 years. He was a long time member of Riverside Yacht Club where he served on the Board of Governors. For many years he was a member of Presbyterian Church of Old Greenwich where he taught Sunday school, confirmation class, served as an Elder and mentored many people. Most recently, Buzz was a member of Stanwich Congregational Church. He was passionate about supporting other faith and youth based organizations such as Tres Dias and Young Life. Buzz was an avid fisherman and a member of The American Littoral Society and Trout Unlimited. He enjoyed sharing his love for God, his faith and fishing with friends, family and especially his grandchildren. His devotion to his wife, Jane, of 43 years is unparalleled and an inspiration to all who know them.
Buzz is survived by his wife Jane Harris; son Elliott “Lee” Harris IV of St. Petersburg, FL; two daughters Kristy Jadlos of Glastonbury, CT and Julie Moeller of New York, NY; a brother Dwight Harris of Burlington, CT; a sister Sherry Harris Erb of Sarasota, FL; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service to celebrate Buzz’s life will be held on Saturday February 5, 2011 at 3:00 PM at Stanwich Congregational Church in Greenwich, CT.
