July 16, 1924 – October 22, 2012
Gloucester, MA – Elizabeth Daley “Betty” Mannle, 88, of Gloucester, MA, and formerly of Pelham Manor, NY and Greenwich, CT, died Monday October 22, 2012, surrounded by her family. She was married for over 63 years to Thomas E. Mannle, Sr. who died in March 2012.
Betty was born on July 16, 1924, the middle child of Walter Ford Daley and Gertrude Darney Daley and was raised in Pelham Manor, NY. She attended Siwanoy School and graduated from Pelham Memorial High School in 1942. She began her college career as a day student at the College of New Rochelle, in New Rochelle, NY. It was while she was at CNR that she began corresponding with a classmate’s brother who was serving in the Army Air Force, and they fell in love after he returned. Betty and Tom were married on April 24, 1948. It was also during her days at CNR that she and 7 of her classmates: Goody, Les, Cuffie, Millie, Boyan, Barney, Urs, along with Betty (aka “Dale”) became life-long friends.
Tom and Betty and their family of 7 children resided in Greenwich, CT (across the hall from Tom’s mother and sisters) and Pelham, NY (across the street from where she grew up). She was an active real estate agent, and helped Tom establish Mannle-Nolan, Inc., a highly regarded and successful brokerage operations firm.
Tom and Betty traveled the world and spent many winters in Venice, FL, with the “villains” of Somerset. Despite seeing many of the world’s amazing places, Betty’s favorite place on earth was Wingaersheek Beach in Gloucester, MA. She began spending time there as a young girl in 1932, with her grandfather W. J. Daley, the postmaster in Hamilton, MA. Her father, Walt, starting building his own house a few lots down in 1950-51, and Betty and Tom migrated a few more lots up the beach, purchasing a place of their own in 1981. Betty loved the magic of Wingaersheek, and looked forward to spending summers at the beach house. Every June beginning in 1986, on the occasion of her 40th reunion, Betty and the ladies from CNR spent 10 days at Wingy, which they had also done in 1946 as a graduation present. This mini-reunion was the highlight of the year for Betty.
Betty loved and cherished her seven children: Thomas Jr. (Ann) of Gloucester, MA; Robert of Santa Fe, NM; William (Maggy) of Branford, CT; Susan Kelly (Richard) of Walkersville, MD; Paul (Lori) of Portsmouth, NH; Sara Rosetti (John) of Beverly, MA; Mimi Humphrey (Scott) of Pelham, NY. She was the proud and loving Ga-Ga to 17 grandchildren, Ryan (Allie) and Kate Mannle, Tim (Stephanie), Brendan, Maura, Devlin, William and Isabel Mannle, Claire Mannle, Erin and Alex Mannle, Hannah and Christopher Rosetti, Elizabeth, Caroline, Quinn and Shea Humphrey, and one great grandchild, Stafford Mannle. She is also fondly remembered by many Daley cousins, nieces and nephews and by the friends of all her children, and grandchildren who had the privilege of knowing “Mom”, “Crazy Betty”, “Henel”, and “Ga-Ga”.
