Born in Columbus, OH, Elise was the daughter of Edward and Juliann Funke. Elise grew up in Pelham Manor, NY, where she married and raised her family, living there for 50 years before eventually moving to Greenwich. Elise and Peter spent summers in Watch Hill beginning in 1952.
Elise was preceded in death by her brother James Funke and her adoring husband of 63 years, Peter B. Griffin, Sr. She is survived by her loving family: Peter Bakewell Griffin, Jr.; daughter, Lisa McGill and husband Jef; grandchildren Sydney and Annie; and many nieces and nephews.
Elise's journey was marked by a rich tapestry of passions and accomplishments. A woman of intellect and grace, Elise graduated from the Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, NY, and continued her education graduating at Marjorie Webster Junior College in Washington, DC, laying the foundation for a life characterized by continuous learning and personal growth.
In addition to her roles as a loving mother and grandmother, Elise was a remarkable teacher in her own right. Those fortunate enough to share time with her always left with a valuable lesson learned. Whether through the stories she shared, the wisdom she imparted, or the genuine interest she took in others, Elise was a source of inspiration and knowledge.
Her unwavering dedication to education was evident in her role as a member of the Board of Trustees at the Masters School. In 2012, Elise received the Richmond Bowl Award for her exceptional support and selfless dedication to her alma mater.
Her love for the arts, rich cultural scenes, and the world of design defined her leisure pursuits. An avid theatre-goer and voracious reader, she found joy and inspiration in the creative expressions of others. Her deep-rooted belief that travel is a great educator led her to explore over 30 countries and across 5 continents, each journey contributing to the fullness of her life.
A woman of strong principles shaped by the lessons of the Depression era, Elise approached each day with frugality, intellectual curiosity and laughter, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her. Her 94 years stand as a testament to a life well-lived, filled with resilience, love, and a profound sense of humor.
Elise was a member of the International Garden Club in Pelham, NY, the Indian Harbor Yacht Club in Greenwich, CT, and the Misquamicut Club and Watch Hill Yacht Club in Watch Hill, RI.
A private service will be held, followed by a celebration of Elise's life next summer. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to Greenwich Hospital or the Warm Shelter in Westerly, RI. These contributions will serve as a lasting tribute to her compassionate spirit and commitment to others.
