Born in Greenville, she was the daughter of the late Silas Walter Arnold and Mary Irene Kinsland Arnold. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest William Merck.
Jenny graduated as salutatorian of Six Mile High School and received a degree from Anderson College.
She was the volunteer librarian at Summit Drive Elementary diligently working daily until a librarian became a funded position. She was an active and loyal member of Earle Street Baptist Church and the Fellowship Sunday School Class. She served as the church librarian for many years. She was an ordained deacon and served for many years as WMU Mission Action Chairman. Jenny was an energetic volunteer in many organizations and was an advocate for libraries and learning. She was a supporter of Clemson University from their library to their sports teams.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Donna Merck Jones and Dr. Edwin Lee Jones of Hollywood, SC; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dan and Theresa Bruce Merck of Taylors, SC and Keith and Vicki Carlton Merck of Greenville, SC; four grandchildren and their spouses, Emily Whiting and Jon, Casey Jones and Helen, Jason Jones and Kelley, Ryan Merck and Carrie; five great-grandchildren, Tyler Bishop, Kaitlyn Whiting, William Jones, Cassidy Jones, and Liam Merck.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Earle Street Baptist Church Scholarship Fund, 225 West Earle Street, Greenville, SC 29609.
Funeral service will be Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at 1:00 pm, officiated by Dr. James Wooten and Dr. Stephen Clyborne at Earle Street Baptist Church with visitation following the service in the church. Burial will follow the visitation in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
