As an avid lover of flowers and gardening she became involved with the various garden clubs of Greenville. Stella was a past president of the Greenville Council of Garden Clubs. During this time she worked with Mayor Max Heller establishing the organization in the present location at 506 Academy Street, the Kilgore-Lewis House. Other positions she held were President of the Greater Greenville Rose Society, President of the Greenville Garden Club, President of the Clarice Wilson Garden Club, and President of the Good Earth Garden Club. Stella also studied to become a National Garden Club, Inc. Master Flower Show Judge and a National Garden Club Inc. Master Landscape Design Critic, Emeritus. Governor Edwards commissioned Stella on the South Carolina Commission of Community Development and Beautification. Being a member of the Garden Club of SC, South Carolina Flower Show Judges Club, life member of National Garden Clubs, Inc., and a life member of National Garden Club of South Carolina are among her many accomplishments. In 2012 she was the recipient of Garden Club of South Carolina Woman of the Year.
Golfing was another favorite pastime of Stella. She was a member of the Ladies 18 Hole Golf Association and played golf for many years at the Greenville Country Club. Traveling, visiting with family members, attending UGA football games, spending many weeks at Litchfield Beach have been some of her favorite activities.
Stella was a former member of Pendleton Street Baptist Church serving as teacher, WMU president and deacon. She led a group of PSBC members on a trip to China visiting the areas that Lottie Moon served. A trip to the Holy Land was another activity she led. In 2013 Stella moved her membership to Edwards Road Baptist Church. She classified herself as a devout Christian.
She is survived by her son Gary L. Stowe (Nancy) of Lawrenceville, GA; grandchildren Charles, Jennifer and Chris Waites and Neil, Joshua, and Elizabeth Stowe; and six great grandchildren.
Stella was predeceased by her parents Rufus and Dora Edmonds Frady, brothers Ralph and Johnny Frady, sister Louise F. Hodge, and daughter Susan S. Waites.
Services for Stella will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2024 at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1 Pine Knoll Dr., Greenville, SC 29609. Visitation begins at 1:00 PM followed by the funeral in the funeral home chapel at 2:00 PM. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park after the service.
