She was in Hospice care at her daughter's home and had been visited earlier that day by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchild.
She was born in Corner, Madison County, Georgia on November 23, 1927, the youngest child of twelve siblings to parents George Milton Compton and Fannie Lou Emma Compton (nee: Scarborough).
The love of her life was Dwight Loden Strickland who she was married to for 65 years. He was the tenth born of eleven siblings and passed away January 3, 2013. They had three children, two daughters and a son. The latter, Dwight Jr., tragically died shortly after birth in 1950.
Enid is survived by her daughters Janet Kerley (husband John) and Gwen Seifert (husband Jeff), who between them provided her with seven grandchildren, sixteen great- grandchildren and one great- great grandchild.
As a child, Enid was brought up on a farm and had to pull her weight in covering its demands. She learned the values of hard work, thrift, focusing on what is currently important, sharing, and finding joy in God's creation. As an adult she worked as a librarian, but during out-of-work hours she devoted her time to her flowers (particularly roses) and extensive vegetable garden, the produce of which she shared with family, neighbors, and Brushy Creek Baptist Church where her husband was a Deacon and Quartet Gospel singer. Her home in Greenville was a busy rest stop for extensive extended family members and friends traveling interstate 1-85. All were welcomed, fed and watered. Enid will be greatly missed.
Visitation for Enid will take place on Sunday, January 7, 2024 at 1:00 pm at Mackey Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1 Pine Knoll Drive,Greenville. Her funeral will follow at 2:00 pm with burial at 3:00 pm in Woodlawn Memorial Park, where she will be reunited with her husband and son, Dwight Sr. and Dwight Jr.
Flowers are welcome, or in lieu of flowers, you may make a donation to the Alzheimer's Association, 123 Antrim Drive, Greenville SC 29607.
