Samuel Austin Hall, 73, of Greenville, South Carolina, passed away Tuesday, September 25, 2018. Sam was born October 21, 1944 in Waynesville, North Carolina to his dear mother, the late Stella Faye Roten Francis of Greenville.
Sam was a 1967 graduate of Montreat College in Black Mountain, North Carolina studying Business and Music. He had a deep love for the Lord and music was a beautiful tool for him to rejoice. He possessed a passion for playing the piano and later learning to play the pipe organ, joyfully making music for his church services whenever called upon. His love of music spanned over six decades and his vast talents were evident whenever he was behind the keys. A member of Saint Paul United Methodist Church, Greenville, South Carolina, Sam shared a significant role mentoring the youth choir and was a member of the chancel choir.
Sam served his country in the United States Army 101st Airborne division and was a Vietnam veteran. Following a successful business career of over twenty-four years with Lowe’s Companies, then a decade of running his own small businesses in Waynesville and Hendersonville, North Carolina, Sam quickly learned he was going to be ineffective at traditional retirement. In 2008, he joined the Funeral Services Industry and found a home with the Mackey Mortuary team in Greenville, South Carolina. Officially holding the title of Funeral Assistant, Sam demonstrated that he could be a far greater asset than a title may indicate. He had an unmatched ability to brighten a room, elevate everyone’s performance and routinely dedicated his special heart to those grieving during difficult times. Sam found a true calling to serve in the Mackey family and they received an angel among men who embodied the Mackey Way.
Countless dear friends loved Sam and will miss his exceptional cooking, rich story-telling, eternal friendship, elaborate seasonal decorations (Christmas was a treat), and his over-whelming desire to continually give to others. His heart was oversized and he was driven to give all he had to those he loved.
Sam is survived by his partner and best friend, John Tate of Greenville, South Carolina; his beloved Cecily Dover Hall of Asheville, North Carolina; and his half-sister, Mary Moody McCrary of Charlotte, North Carolina. He is also survived by his son, William Brian Hall (Meredyth) of Charlotte, North Carolina. He is preceded in death by his half-brother, Joe Moody of Maggie Valley, North Carolina.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday, September 27, 2018 at Mackey Funerals and Cremations, 311 Century Drive, Greenville, South Carolina, 29607.
A Celebration of his Life will be held 1:00 PM Friday, September 28, 2018 at Saint Paul United Methodist Church in Greenville, South Carolina with Pastors Michael Goldston and Murray Snow officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Music Ministry of Saint Paul United Methodist Church.
