Born in Chester, South Carolina, he was a son of the late Olin Stanton Luthi and Helen Perry Geiger Pitts.
Mr. Luthi was an Alumnus of Greenville High School and the University of Alabama. While attending the University of Alabama, he served in the United States Air Force as a Sergeant and an Honor Guard while stationed at Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi Mississippi. Following the Air Force, he returned to Greenville where he became a South Carolina licensed General Contractor. While serving as President of Luthi Construction Co., Inc., he built residential and commercial properties. His lifelong profession in real estate and development later led him to establish Luthi Mortgage Co., Inc.
Mr. Luthi was a member of Christ Church Episcopal and is descended from one of the Church’s founding families. He was confirmed in the church and served as an acolyte in his youth. He was a member of the Poinsett Club, the Nine O’ Clock Dance Club, Recovery Masonic Lodge #31AFM, American Legion Post 3, N. Greenville Rotary Club where he served on the Board of Directors, Elks Club, Amvets, and a Hejaz Shriner. Mr. Luthi also served 4 years on the Greenville County Drug and Alcohol Commission, 8 years on the S.C. Human Affairs Commission and was Executive Committeeman of the Boy Scouts of America.
In his early thirties, Mr. Luthi moved his family to a farm near the town of Woodruff where he raised horses and cattle. He expanded his real estate and development business to Spartanburg County and became involved in the civic duties in the town of Woodruff. Here he served as Chairman of the United Fund for the March of Dimes, was an active member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club. He was a member of Three Pines Country Club. He returned to live in Greenville after nine years.
Mr. Luthi received The Order of the Palmetto in 1983 where he was designated “A Palmetto Gentleman” by Governor Richard W. Riley. He also was listed in the Who’s Who Directory of Leading American Executives in 1993.
Surviving are four daughters, Charlotte “Chartee” L. Pratt of Athens Georgia, Desmine “Deedee” L. Sartain, Fredricka “Freida” L. Duckworth and Helen “Geiget” L. Rosemund, and a son, Perry Stanton Luthi, Jr. (Joy) of Greenville, 10 Grandchildren and 7 Great Grandchildren.
Mr. Luthi is predeceased by his brother, Harry Butler Luthi, Sr.
The funeral service will be held at Christ Church Episcopal, 10, N. Church Street, Greenville, SC 29601 at 3:00pm on Wednesday, October 12, 2022. A burial will follow, with Military Honors, at Woodlawn Memorial Park 1 Pine Knoll Dr. Greenville, SC 29609.
The family would like to express their gratitude for the care received from the CNA’s and staff of Cascades Verdae and the Hospice staff of Interim Health Care.
A celebration of Mr. Luthi’s life will immediately follow the burial at the Poinsett Club 807 E Washington St. Greenville, SC 29601.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christ Church Episcopal, or the charity of one’s choice.
