He led a joyful life of 90 years. Born in 1932 to Fred and Arizona Bell in Chester, SC, he joined the US Air Force in 1951, receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1955.
The GI Bill afforded him the opportunity to earn degrees from Catawba College and Gardner-Webb College. While at Gardner-Webb, he met his future wife of 53 years, the late Elva Miller Bell.
Paul’s professional career as an accountant culminated as Controller of North Carolina newspapers for Freedom Communications, including the Gaston Gazette.
He was active in his community: Master of his Masonic Lodge and 33rd degree Mason, supporter of the Olympic High School Marching Band, Deacon of Steele Creek Presbyterian Church and Chairman of the church’s Cemetery Committee.
His greatest pride, however, was manifested in his roles as husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his loving children and their families: Susan Bell and David Palmer of Greenville; Amy and Peter Chase of Taylors; and Greg Bell and Maureen Snyder of Pittsburgh. He is remembered by his adoring grandchildren: Kate and Evan Bell.
He is also survived by his sister Wrennie Bell Goins. He was predeceased by other siblings: John Morgan Bell, Nida Bell Gainer and Frederick Thomas Bell, Jr.
Those who met him will remember his cheerful outlook, constant good humor and generous heart.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
