Morris W. Keller

Morris (Moose) Wilson Keller passed away at home on February 10, 2023. He was born July 6, 1937 in Greenville, SC to Woodrow and Retha (Huggins) Keller. They also lived for a short time in Charlotte, NC.

Morris enjoyed playing football for Greenville High School during the 1950’s. He was honored in his high school years with All-American, All-Southern, All-State, All Conference titles. He received and proudly displayed for many years, a certificate for participating in The Shriner’s Bowl. The wife of one of his high school friends recently shared how Morris would carry her husband from class to class as he was suffering from some physical challenges during those years.

“Moose” had the greatest time playing for Clemson and receiving a draft to the pros. He played in the Bluebonnet Bowl, his freshman year. A club scout for the Philadelphia Eagles came to see him in November 1960. He said, “Moose! You’re supposed to be with the Baltimore Colts. We want you!” Dad was a free agent and he didn’t know it. Morris made lifelong friends during his football days. He was also known, underneath his tough exterior, to be a kind, compassionate classmate. Many times, in their later years, he served his friends and wept for them as they battled their own health challenges.

He met the love of his life, Charlton Booker, at a dance around Thanksgiving in 1957. They were engaged Valentine’s Day 1958 and married July 26, 1958. They were movie star gorgeous. They had the kind of passion, love, and angst that you would see in Rebel Without A Cause or Splendor In the Grass. They enjoyed 64 years of married life. As they both grew physically weaker, they were protective of each other. Clinging to one another, until God called Charlton to her heavenly home in August of 2022. He has missed his wife greatly and we are comforted that they are once again reunited.

Being the ultimate salesman, Morris worked for the FMC Corporation. The family was transferred from Greenville, SC to Roanoke, VA and out to Oklahoma for 14 years with FMC. They returned to SC, in 1983, for Morris to take over his father’s film and packaging business.

In Oklahoma, they were introduced to experiencing an intimate relationship with Christ and living an abundant life that included quiet time in prayer and the Word. They also discipled others, faithfully attended church and Bible Study. Sharing their testimonies in large group settings and leading others to a personal relationship with Christ were highlights of their lives. Morris was committed to scripture memory. He enjoyed reviewing scripture and having one ready for any need.

He is survived by three loving daughters, Kim Shelton (Scott),) Marie Ploof (Todd), and Ryan Watson (Tim Morrill). Additionally, he was Paw-Paw to 7 grandsons and 1 granddaughter: Wes, Kyle, and Blake Jones; Tyler and Brett Shelton; Bryson, Carter, and Gracie Watson. There are 4 great grandchildren: Leyton and Reagan Jones; Cade Jones; Adilyn Shelton. Morris is also survived by a sweet sister who adored him, Ann Keller Counas; a very loving brother and wife Michael and Debbie Keller. Morris was 14 years old when Michael was born. We have uncovered a video that shows how much he doted on Michael as a baby. Morris grew up in a large, extended family who celebrated many happy holidays and occasions together, he was close to and survived by numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude for the love and devotion shown by many friends and family during this time. We are also thankful for the tender care and support given by Open Arms Hospice.

A memorial service for Morris will be held on Sunday, February 19, 2023 at 2:30 PM in the chapel at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1 Pine Knoll Dr. Greenville, SC 29609.
