Michael King Burgess of Greenville died Tuesday, October 26th after a long and courageous battle with respiratory illness. He was the loving and devoted husband to Mary Elizabeth “Betsy” Richardson as well as a caring first born son and a fierce older brother.
He is survived by his wife Betsy; Mother, Barbara Burgess; Brothers Joe Burgess (Amy); Sam Burgess (Gilian) and niece Chelsea. Preceded in death is his father Julian Burgess.
Mike was a pioneer in Greenville’s fledgling live music scene throughout the 1980’s and ‘90’s. He played drums for several bands, including the Ducky Boys and Symbolic Reason. Younger brother Sam would later join him in Symbolic Reason as their bass player. Mike continued to play for many years thereafter.
Mike met all the criteria for being an older brother to Joe and Sam. He could make you laugh, get angry and cry – although not usually at the same time.
Mike became an Electrical Engineer and worked for sixteen years at Hamilton Automation in Greenville.
Mike lived his life on his own terms. But he also lived each day with courage and compassion. And he would want us all to do the same.
Although Mike studied and loved Rock Music, he also had a deep appreciation for animals. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to be made to Concerned Citizens for Animals.
Visitation will be Tuesday, November 2nd, 5pm to 7pm at Mackey’s Funeral and Cremations – 311 Century Drive, Greenville.
The family has requested that everyone wear a mask.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.mackeycenturydrive.com for the BURGESS family.
