Martha Meade, 92, formerly of Greenville, South Carolina, departed from this life into the arms of her heavenly Father on December 11, 2024 after a lengthy illness. She was born in Nicholasville, Kentucky and was the fourth child of Newton Barry and Ruth McConathy.
She graduated from Centre College in Danville, Kentucky and was a first grade teacher until becoming a homemaker after the birth of her children. She met and married the love of her life, Jack, in Louisville, Kentucky and they were married for 51 years. He often said that she was the “kindest, sweetest, gentlest person I have ever known,” and affectionately called her, “Sweet.” She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.
Martha had a strong faith and was a member of John Knox Presbyterian Church where she attended the Women in Christ Sunday School Class.
She was a talented seamstress and an avid reader. She also enjoyed playing bridge and being involved in her neighborhood Garden Club. Above all, she was known for the love of her family.
Martha is survived by her children, Marilyn Penrod and husband Jeff of Columbia, South Carolina, and Susan Rzepczynski and husband Gregg of Chicago, Illinois, as well as grandchildren, Harper and Gregg Rzepczynski of Chicago.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jack; granddaughter, Blakely Rzepczynski; parents, Newton Barry McConathy and Ruth McConathy; sisters, Sara Hart Hagan and Laura Wiley; brother, Barry McConathy; and her many pets that have crossed the Rainbow Bridge.
The family would like to thank the staff on Congaree at Still Hopes Episcopal Community in Columbia, as well as Christine from Heart of Hospice, for the outstanding care they provided for Martha during her final years.
A graveside service for Martha will be held Friday, December 27, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1 Pine Knoll Drive, Greenville, SC 29609. Family will greet visitors beginning at 10:30 AM at the graveside.
