Born on May 8th, 1930, he was the son of the late Hal and Inez (Sullens) Hopkins of the Dunean community. He attended West Gant School and later joined the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific for four years. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 3, in which he marched and played the trumpet in the band. James was as successful business owner of Greenville Mopeds, as well as a local apartment complex. He was a faithful member of Faith Free Presbyterian Church of Greenville.
James was happily married to Ernestine Aiken of Easley for 55 years before her passing in 2019. James and “Teena” were never blessed with children, but are survived by his niece Lina Janis Shackelford of Greenville; two cousins, Dianne (David) Kirk of Easley, and Teresa Westmoreland of Easley, two nephews Bobby (Missy) Aiken of Easley, and Pastor Brian (Nancy) Aiken of Easley, as well as numerous great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife Ernestine; his parents Mr. and Mrs. Hal Hopkins, and younger sister Eleanor J. Mercier.
A visitation for James will be held Friday, August 2, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1 Pine Knoll Drive, Greenville, SC 29609, with a funeral service to follow at 3:00 PM in the chapel.
