Iris was predeceased by her husband, Bruce, whom she met and married while he was in England, serving with the U.S. Army/Air Force. She was also predeceased by her two sisters, Joyce and Vera Mortlock of West Sussex, England. After coming to the United States in 1955, she sang in a number of church choirs and directed two youth choirs, also providing piano accompaniment. She also taught Sunday School and was involved in a number of other church-related activities. She was an accomplished seamstress and also enjoyed needlepoint, knitting, cake decorating, and yardwork.
While growing up in England during World War II, she knitted numerous items of clothing for the British Armed Forces and delivered knitting supplies to shut-ins. Also, as a part of the war effort, she and a group of friends wrote and performed a concert for the public, the proceeds from which were donated to the British Red Cross. She was leader of a Cub Scout pack and took the boys camping and on scouting retreats. She was active in her church youth and drama groups, and was a Sunday School teacher.
After retiring from Rexham Inc. with 27 years of service as an Administrative Assistant and publisher of the Industrial Division newsletter, she became a volunteer at Presbyterian Hospital Matthews and served on the Auxiliary Board and Executive Committee. She volunteered for nearly 25 years and was recognized in a ceremony for being the hospital’s longest-tenured volunteer. She was a member of the Charlotte Christian Women’s Club, the British Ladies Club, and Morning Star Lutheran Church of Matthews where she sang in the chancel choir.
Iris is survived by her two sons, Steven (Cindy) of Piedmont, South Carolina, and Philip (Patricia) of Indian Trail, North Carolina; four grandchildren, Kathryn (Josh), Matthew (Alix), Amanda (Stefan), and Joseph (Rose), as well as three great-grandchildren, Ava, Bennett, and Chipper. Her legacy will live on in the hearts and lives of her family, as well as those who knew and loved her.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Iris Jordan will be held at Morning Star Lutheran Church on Saturday, February 10 at 11:00 AM, with pastor John Mouritsen officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Private interment will take place at Sharon
