It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Hatcher Morton, an incredibly intelligent and kind-hearted 18-year-old young man who loved everyone he met and most of all, loved Jesus. After a year-long battle with cancer, Hatcher passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 22, surrounded and held tightly by his family.
Hatcher was born on January 10, 2005, to Eric and Shelly Morton and grew up in Charlotte, NC, Charleston, SC, Las Vegas, NV, Marysville, OH, Winterville, GA and Greenville, SC. He quickly established himself as a bright and caring student who loved learning. He was interested in multiple ideas, subjects, and theories concurrently. He read voraciously. Teaching and explaining things came naturally to him. His intelligence and academic achievements earned him recognition and respect from his peers and teachers alike.
In addition to his academic interests, Hatcher was also known for his kind heart, infectious personality, and love of traveling. People of all ages tended to gravitate toward him. His unwavering faith in Jesus was a cornerstone of his life, and he would share his love of God and his faith with others. At age twelve, he made a profession to yield his life to God’s will. His life was a testament to his strong faith and wisdom of things that have eternal value. He held tightly to his faith and loved God to his last breath on this earth.
The day after his 17th birthday, Hatcher commented that there was something wrong with his liver. Six weeks later, a tumor was identified in his stomach. It had already metastasized to many parts of his body, including his liver. Despite the challenges that lay ahead, Hatcher remained positive and determined throughout his treatment. He drew strength from his faith and his love for his family and friends, and the countless prayers going up on his behalf. His unwavering positivity and courage inspired everyone around him.
While God called Hatcher back to Himself sooner than we expected, his legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched. His memory will forever be cherished by his parents, Eric & Shelly, his siblings, Carson & Zoë, both sets of grandparents, Larry & Deborah Morton and Doug & Cynde Stearns, aunts, uncles, cousins, and his many friends and loved ones.
A funeral and celebration of Hatcher’s life will be held on Saturday, March 4 at the Demorest convention grounds at 803 Double Springs Rd, Demorest, GA 30535. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM. The service will begin at 11:30 AM. After the service, a catered lunch will be provided.
If you are considering sending flowers, the family asks that you would instead consider donating to curechildhoodcancer.org in honor of Hatcher. If you still want to send flowers, please send them to 803 Double Springs Rd, Demorest, GA 30535.
We will miss you dearly Hatcher, but we take comfort in knowing that you are now at peace and free from pain. The world is a little dimmer now that your light has left us. Rest in God’s peace Hatcher, and thank you for your vitality, your intelligence, and the love that you brought into our lives.
