On February 28, 2023 Carl "Bo" Matheny, a Greenville native and long time Realtor, left this earth to join his Lord and Savior and to reunite with his beloved parents. Born in Greenville, SC on July 17, 1950, Bo was the only child of Carl Smith Matheny and Sue Bedenbaugh Matheny, his loving & beloved parents who predeceased him. He is survived by numerous dear cousins and countless treasured friends. He was deeply appreciative, pleased, and proud of the quality and quantity of his many good friends, considering that one of his life's greatest pleasures and privileges. He was grateful to have come along when he did, where he did, and with whom he did.
Bo was a long time member of Earle Street Baptist Church, after having spent his early years at Central Baptist Church. He tried to espouse the Golden Rule. Favorite Bible verses included Proverbs 11:25 (translated) - 'A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed." Favorite adages included "Meet a new person every day and leave them the better for it" and "Laugh and the world laughs with you; cry and you cry alone". He loved to laugh & to share laughs. Honesty, integrity, character, & credibility were of paramount importance to him.
Bo enjoyed a fun & wonderful childhood, being blessed with great, loving parents as well as many good friends. After attending Summit Drive Elementary School and Greenville Junior High School (where he was the first 7th grader to ever win the school spelling bee), Bo attended Wade Hampton High School where he graduated in 1968.While at WHHS, he served as Junior Class President and Spanish Club President, was Junior Class Citizen-of-the-Year, and played Varsity football as well as Junior Varsity basketball, baseball, & football. Also while at Wade Hampton, he made many treasured lifelong good friends. Bo graduated in 1972 with a BS degree in Industrial Management from Clemson University, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and active in Intramural sports. He was an avid Clemson sports fan.
In early post-college days, Bo worked for several years in various administrative-management positions for Greenville County and SC State government, including the positions of Management Analyst, Assistant Internal Auditor, and Administrator of the Greenville County Mental Health Center. In 1981, he pursued his interest to be in business for himself by embarking on a career in real estate, and he proceeded to be a member of the Greater Greenville Association of Realtors for 30 years. Bo is one of the rare members of the Greater Greenville Association of Realtors ever to achieve both the prestigious CCIM and CRS designations, indicative of excellent skill and productivity in both Commercial and Residential real estate brokerage. During his real estate career, he generated over $100 million in Greenville real estate sales. After previously being associated for 25 years with RE/MAX, where he achieved the RE/MAX Hall of Fame, he was most recently associated with The Marchant Company. Bo enjoyed making good friends with many Realtors, clients, & customers during his career.
