He was born on October 11, 1925 in Guilford County, the son of James N. and Emma Lee Phibbs Spencer. He served his country in the US Navy. He worked with Lorillard Tobacco as a machinist until his retirement. Walt was a lifelong member of Centenary United Methodist Church. He also was an Odd Fellow and Kiwanian. He loved to play golf and always had a kind sense of humor. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He will be deeply missed

Walt was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Steele Spencer and his son, Walter Spencer Jr.; two sisters and two brothers. Those left to cherish his memory are his daughters; Gail Ann Engels and husband Gary of Lake Wylie, SC and Deborah S. Gipple and husband Dale of Greensboro, NC; two sisters, Doris Meece of Greensboro, NC and Dora McCallops of Syracuse, NY; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
A Celebration of his Life will be held on Friday, 2:00 p.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church, 2300 W. Friendly Ave. Burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church in the Fellowship Hall.
