Lee was born in Danville, VA, on November 18th, 1944, to the late Whitcomb Randolph and Lillian Wilson Scott, as the oldest of four siblings. She attended high school at George Washington H.S. and graduated in 1963. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, earning a Master’s in Library Science.
Lee worked as a librarian in Danville and Richmond, VA after graduation. On December 31st, 1967, she married Gordon Ellis Grant. They remained married until his passing on March 5th, 2021. After Gordon’s return from Vietnam in 1970, Lee and Gordon moved to Alexandria, VA, where she worked in the Alexandria public library. In 1978, their son, Scott Gordon Grant was born.
With the birth of her son, Lee devoted herself to her family. She was the foundation of the household, handling all matters from finance to carpentry. Lee became an accomplished genealogist, taking the role of the family historian. In this endeavor, she was able to trace the Scott family line to the 1600’s. She also took on the task of preserving and cataloging family photographs and documents.
When Scott graduated high school in 1996, Lee returned to work. She worked as an instructional aide at Waynewood Elementary School in Fairfax, VA for the next 26 years. As one of the longest serving staff at the school, Lee was loved by generations of students at Waynewood. She refined her photographic skills, and became the school’s photographer, creating yearbooks that were treasured by the students she taught.
Lee retired in 2016 and moved to Greensboro, NC to be closer to her son and her family. Family continued to be primary for her, as she cared her husband until his death in March, 2021. She was a devoted mother to her son, and had a life-long love of animals, caring for her dog, Molly, and pet parrot, Tony, as well as a multitude of wild birds in her neighborhood.
Lee lived a life full of love and service for 78 years. She was an incredibly strong woman, well organized, and touched everyone with her strength, caring, and generosity. Lee was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Gordon Grant, and by her brother Steven Scott. Lee is survived by her son, Scott Grant, her step-granddaughter, Christy Hampton, her brother, Randy Scott, and her sister, Rebecca Zimmerman.
Lee outlined all aspects of her end of life wishes. She did not want a funeral. If so inclined, in lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in her name to College Place United Methodist Church, in Greensboro, NC, or to an animal or nature welfare organization of your choice, such as the A.S.P.C.A. or the World Wildlife Fund.
