After attending East Lansing High School, she graduated from Michigan State University in 1967. After college she taught high school social studies for one year, but was so concerned about social issues that she began working as a case worker in a local welfare department. She then attended the University of Michigan and received a Master’s Degree in Social Work. After a hiatus to begin a family, she worked tirelessly as a social worker for decades. Among many efforts, she started a program for the children of alcoholics at a regional treatment center. She served as a mentor to graduate students from the University of Michigan and several other local colleges.
Sue was an elder and deacon at the First Presbyterian Church in Ann Arbor and helped start an overnight shelter program for homeless at the church. She volunteered at the Delonis Center for homeless, was on the board of the Ann Arbor Summer Festival and helped to raise funds for the University of Michigan Cancer Center. Sue felt the pain of social injustice throughout the world and worked passionately to help others.
Her wonderful smile and her desire and ability to connect to so many people will always be remembered.
She is survived by her loving husband of 49 years William, sons Scott (wife Sandra) and Jesse (wife Nicole), granddaughters Madeline, Lily, Sydney and Tyler, mother Barbara Plesscher, and siblings Judy, Bob, Jim and Patty. She is preceded in death by her father William Plesscher and brother William.
