Susan Maureen Bieber, 25, suddenly died May 2, 2011, the result of an accidental fall in New York City. Beloved daughter of Peter Steven Bieber and Mary Ellen Burke; cherished niece of James and Barbara Burke, Beverly and Richard Sawilchik, the late Therese and Robert Haugh, Patrick Burke, Robert and Lori Burke, Kenneth and Margie Bieber, and Janet and Martin Kalin; dear cousin of many, especially dear Eben. A celebration of Susan’s life will be held Saturday, May 14, 2011 at 1:00 P.M. at First Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the Mullin Life Center next to the sanctuary.
Susan was born in Greensboro on July 13, 1985, and raised in First Presbyterian Church. Having been baptized as an infant, she confirmed her belief in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at the age of 13. She served Him over the years through mission work in the church, through Young Life at Grimsley High School and with her sorority sisters in Phi Beta Chi. Upon employment after college graduation, she chose to use her first two weeks vacation to travel on a mission to Ethiopia to work with children in orphanages.
Susan is a Life Member of Girl Scouts, and received the Gold Award in 2002. She is a 2003 graduate of Grimsley High School where she proudly sang with the Madrigal Singers, and a 2007 graduate of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After graduation, she accepted a dance internship in New York City, and later accepted employment in the hedge fund industry. She loved her North Carolina roots, but just couldn't bear to leave her adopted city.
Susan sang, danced and smiled her way through life. Never having known a stranger, she instantly made friends in NYC through church, the UNC Alumni Association, and her knew-found love, ZogSports. ZogSports, 'play for a cause,' is a social and sports outlet, and it allowed her to continue to indirectly do charitable work. Susan participated in three Avon Walks (39.3 miles) for Breast Cancer, one in New York and two in Charlotte. She was anticipating her fourth walk this coming October in New York.
She was a UNC Rams Club member and a true-blue Tar Heel fan. She brought many of her New York friends to her team's basketball games televised at Brother Jimmy's BBQ in New York. She often planned trips home to Greensboro to coincide with UNC football or basketball game attendance.
Her 'To-Do' list included 'swimming with dolphins,' which she was able to achieve on a recent family vacation. The list also included 'save a life.' She actually saved five lives after her heart, liver, pancreas, and both kidneys found needy recipients on May 2.
We firmly believe that she is singing and dancing with Jesus right now, and is one by one meeting many new friends in heaven.
