Greensboro - Sarah Charlotte Newby, age 72, died September 22, 2014 at The Lakes at Litchfield after an extended illness. Sarah was born Dec. 29, 1941 in Charlotte, NC and was the daughter of the late Fred Bulla Newby and Ruth Bryant Newby.
Sarah will be remembered as a kind, giving person who was a devoted daughter, niece, aunt, and friend. She was artistic and loved to draw and paint, taking many art classes throughout her life. She was a voracious reader and her handwriting was so exquisite that it was a joy to receive a note from her. Like her parents, she was very interested in the history of Greensboro and Guilford County, and for many years took an active role in several community organizations, helping others who were in need.
Sarah attended Greensboro Woman’s College, now known as UNC-G. She worked for the internationally renowned interior designer Otto Zenke as his executive assistant for a number of years. She later worked for Wrangler, and began work with Kayser-Roth Corporation in 1984. She was Director of Human Resources for Kayser-Roth when she retired in 2006.
Sarah had been a member of Beta Sigma Phi since 1960 and throughout the years held every office and served on every committee, as well as serving as the Greensboro Beta Sigma Phi City Council President. In December 2010 she was honored for her fifty years in the sorority. Prior to becoming ill, Sarah had served on the Board of Directors of the Women’s Resource Center of Greensboro, as an Elder at Westminster Presbyterian Church, was a supporter of Greensboro Urban Ministry, often serving breakfast on Sunday mornings at The Weaver House Project. She participated in the Westminster Presbyterian Appalachian Service Project, and the Interfaith Hospitality Network.
Survivors include a brother Fred B. Newby, Sr. (Cheryl) of Murrells Inlet, SC; a niece, Redding Kessinger of Riga, Latvia; a nephew, F. Bryant Newby, Jr. of Asheville, NC; cousins James W. Bryant, Jr. and Linda Hurley of Greensboro, and Hunter Holloway Jones, of Smithfield, VA.
The family wishes to thank Sarah’s devoted friends and sorority sisters for their strong and steadfast support through her years of illness.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Sept. 25, 2014 at 10:30 AM at Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home (N. Elm Street) in Greensboro, NC. Family will receive friends following the service. Burial will take place in Randleman, NC.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be sent to either Westminster Presbyterian Church, 3906 West Friendly Avenue Greensboro, NC 27410
or Tidelands Hospice, 2591 N. Fraser St. Georgetown, SC 29440.
