Rebecca White Shaffer Peters, age 81, of Greensboro, NC, passed away on February 22, 2022 of natural causes. Becky is survived by her daughters, Beth (Joe) Conley and Rebecca Todd Peters (Jeff Hatcher); four grandchildren, Ashley (Tim) Yates, Katherine Bohnert (James Coursey), Sophia Hatcher Peters, and Eve Hatcher Peters; two sisters, Ann Bagwell (Fred Bagwell) and Libby Winkler. Becky was predeceased by her husband, Jamie Samuel Peters in 2000.
Becky was born on June 30, 1940 in Harrisonburg, VA. After she graduated from Princeton High School in 1958, she attended Queens College in Charlotte, NC. After graduating in 1962, she moved to Richmond, VA where she taught elementary school and met Sam on a blind date, they married six months later on July 19, 1963 and were married for 38 years.
She was a lifelong Presbyterian and an active community leader, serving as a Guardian Ad Litem, Girl Scout troop leader and in the P.E.O. She served actively as a minister’s wife throughout her husband’s ministry and was proud to be elected as a ruling elder after his death. She had a heart and passion for ministry and served as the Moderator of Presbyterian Women and Circle leader at multiple churches. She was an active Stephen Minister and Stephen Leader and she started and led widow’s groups in several different churches. She was a leader and friend to many people in Presbyterian churches across the South.
In her later years, she developed an interest in creating art. She took many adult art classes, becoming an avid painter and jewelry maker. Becky enjoyed sharing her work with family and friends. She ran her neighborhood HOA for a decade and then moved to Friend’s Home and continued to build community and care for those around her.
Her commitment to her family defined her life. After raising her own children, she was an active partner in loving, caring for, and raising her four grandchildren. She cared deeply for everyone in her life and her deep relationship with God guided her life and the loving care she put into everything she did.
