He was a devoted son, husband, father, brother, and friend. With his charismatic personality and warm smile, Mark showed a genuine interest in every person who crossed his path, and he particularly loved mentoring young people in their careers. He was innately diplomatic, and his gracious, steady nature made him a trusted advisor to his clients, his partners, his family and friends.
Mark was born October 24, 1959 in Statesville, North Carolina to the late Gladys Hill and Bill Dermot Yarbrough, who survives him. He spent his childhood in Lexington and moved to Greensboro in the fifth grade.
He was a graduate of Dudley High School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
His professional career in public accounting spanned thirty- eight years, and he retired as Managing Partner of PriceWaterhouse Coopers in Greensboro. Among his closest friends were his fellow partners.
Mark was an avid reader and collector of books, a compelling storyteller, and an enthusiastic traveler and outdoorsman, filling each day with "the more activities the better."
As an elder of First Presbyterian, Mark served the church in a variety of roles. He expressed his devotion to the Greensboro community through his membership in the Greensboro Rotary Club and Sons of the American Revolution, as well as his service with the Children’s Museum, Community Foundation and the UNC Tax Center.
Mark particularly enjoyed the groups he was a part of and the friendships that were forged over many years, especially his indoor tennis group, various golf groups, and his Bible Study Fellowship group.
Mark loved watching and playing sports, and he considered a perfect day being one in which he achieved a “trifecta” of playing three sports throughout the course of the day. He was a loyal supporter of the Carolina Tarheels and the Davidson Wildcats, with his favorite teams being the ones on which his children played. He displayed a keen interest in student athletes and loved to encourage them by name, by familiarizing himself with their positions, and by knowing their stats.
Mark is survived by his wife of thirty- five wonderful years, Anne Cochrane Yarbrough, son, Walter Cochrane Yarbrough of Tampa, Florida, daughter, Caroline Holt Yarbrough of New York City, and daughter, Katherine Newlin Yarbrough, a rising senior at his beloved University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is also survived by his steadfast and dedicated brother Steven Gregory Yarbrough and wife Anne Hill, brothers and sisters in law, Jean Mann and Eugene Wilson Cochrane, Susan Cochrane and William Curtis Blount, eight nieces and nephews and three grand nephews.
