Born in Greensboro, NC on August 7, 1943 to the late Frank Holder Permar and Ruby Heilig Permar, Kay grew up in Greensboro, graduated from Greensboro Senior High School and received a BA in Elementary Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
After college Kay taught 3rd grade at Guilford School. Much later she taught in interim teaching positions as well as substitute teaching for her daughter's first grade class and other classes.
Kay's Christian faith was central to her life. One of her favorite verses was: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Philippians 4:13
She was a devoted daughter, sister, aunt, wife, and mother. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, John A. Slater, daughter, Alyssa Kay Slater, brother, John Permar (Kay), niece, Tracy Boyd (Mark) nephew, Frank Permar (Connie) and great niece, Caroline Boyd Powers (Jason).
The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation for her caregivers at Friends Homes, AuthoraCare and long-time home caregiver and friend, Stacey Watkins.
