Joseph Hilliard “Big Joe” Hensley of Greensboro died peacefully on May 2, 2012. He was 72. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Linda; his two sons, The Rev. Joseph Jr and Samuel; brother Jan Hensley, daughters-in-law, Sarah White and Erin Hensley and his three grandchildren, Lucy, Stella and Owen Hensley.
Funeral and interment will be held at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 607 N. Greene Street in Greensboro on Saturday May 5th at 2 p.m. with reception to follow in the Haywood Duke Room.
A Greensboro native, Joe attended Greensboro Senior High and Wake Forest University where he was a Demon Deacon mascot and a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. He served in the US Navy, worked for Sears Roebuck, owned and operated Willow Haven Rest Home and was an administrator for Village Green Retirement Community. “Big Joe” had a big heart, as evidenced by service to his family, church and community. He loved caring for the elderly, building Habitat For Humanity Homes, serving as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 230 and raising money for the CROP Walk for hunger relief. He also loved golf, bowling, singing, daily crossword puzzles, Andy Griffith, cheering on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons and walking his dog, Khaki. At Holy Trinity, he served as Senior and Junior Warden, Usher, Acolyte Master, receptionist and pioneer of the Glory Ridge Mission Trip Truck Ministry in Madison County.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Holy Trinity or Habitat For Humanity Homes.
