A funeral service will be held Thursday, February 24, 2022, 2:00 p.m., at Christ Way Church. Burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., prior to the service, at the church.
John was born April 23, 1940 in Birmingham, AL, the son of Harry Houston Wheeler and Laura Elnora Oakes Wheeler.
John was ordained by the Wesleyan Church as a minister. He enjoyed serving others along the way both by his encouraging words and with the resources needed, as well as planning celebrations. He was a giver. His favorite pastime was putting wheels on anything with his son in law, Steve.
John worked for the law firm of Cahoon and Swisher beginning in 1975 until his retirement in 2011. Prior to that, John was a pastor at Rock Hill Evangelical Friends in Eagle Springs, Holly Hill Wesleyan Church in Thomasville and Saxapahaw Evangelical Friends Church. He was a founding member of Thomasville Christian Fellowship as well as a charter member of Christ Way Church in Greensboro.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother, Larry Wheeler.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of over 63 years, Mary Wheeler; children, Ruth Collins (Steve), Rebecca Crenshaw (Brian), and Phillip Wheeler (Martha) all of Greensboro; sister, Bertha Slappey of Trussville, AL; grandchildren, Patrick, Drew, Jake, Julia, Isabelle and Chiara; great grandchildren, Hope and Corey.
