Unapologetically unique and resistant to convention, John became a cherished and renowned artist in his community. He was a generous person with a vibrant personality and a distinct style of art. His ever-present stark humor was evident in all that he said and did, and always complemented by his contagious laugh.
His dream, as a long-time teacher of art history, was to travel to Italy and see all the great works of art, which he achieved in September 2015. He was a dedicated father, genuine friend, and valued member of the community.
John’s greatest joy was spending time with his three children. They will all remember John taking them downtown every Friday night for swimming, Chinese food and dumpster diving, and how every situation became more funny just by his presence.
John is survived by his mother Lillian, 2 brothers Joel and Jackie, and 3 children Sam, Ben and Sophie Martin whom he raised alongside his former wife, Susanne Baker, with whom he shared 30 years. John will always be remembered fondly by his niece, Carly, and nephews, Daniel and Eli, who he loved very much.
