John was born August 3, 1937 in Charlotte, NC to the late Agnes Thorne and John Sumter MacRae, Jr. He moved to Greensboro, NC when he was three years old and graduated from Curry High School at UNCG in 1955. He graduated in architecture from the School of Design at NC State in 1961. He opened his own firm and practiced architecture in Greensboro until 2012 with projects throughout North Carolina and in several adjoining states.
John married Eugenia Hickerson in 1959 in Greensboro. They moved to Friedberg, Germany in 1962 where John was a first lieutenant in the 2nd Medium Tank Battalion in Germany and where their first son, Doug, was born. They returned to Greensboro in 1964 and had their second son, Robert.
He was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro where he served as an Elder and on several committees. He was also a member of the Agape Sunday School class.
John enjoyed sailing and made countless trips over the years from his house in Oriental, NC. His most memorable sailing trip was to Bermuda.
John is survived by his sons – John Douglas MacRae (Sharon) of Raleigh, NC and Robert Thorne MacRae of Clemson, SC; grandchildren – Daniel, Drew, Patterson, Ryan, Molly and Duncan; sister – Pat MacRae; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Eugenia MacRae.
The family would like to thank the caring staff at River Landing Retirement Community where John lived for the almost a decade.
A celebration of his life will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro on Friday, October 25 at 2 PM. A visitation will be held immediately following the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro.
