Jimmy McCain Matthews of Mount Airy, NC passed away on Monday, November 26, 2012 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston –Salem, NC following a long illness. He was born on October16, 1944 in High Point, NC, the son of the late Robert Franklin Matthews, Sr. and Marguerite Oldham Matthews. He leaves one brother, Robert Franklin Matthews, Jr. and his wife Katherine of High Point, NC.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Deborah Carver Matthews, his daughters, Lisa Matthews of Winston-Salem, NC, Laurie Matthews and her husband Phil of Trinity, NC, and Allison Matthews of Archdale, NC and a son, Richard ”Rick” Matthews of Fort Worth, TX; in addition four step children, Bryan Wood and wife Lisa of Seattle, WA, Denise Schoemer and husband John of Myrtle Beach, SC, Wayne Chisgar of High Point, NC and Dennis Chisgar of Lexington, NC, four grandchildren, Sarah Jackson, Bailey Holt, Caleb Messer, and Delaney Matthews three nephews Robert Franklin Matthews, III of Trinity, Christopher Matthews of Mocksville, NC and Bret Matthews of High Point, NC, and one niece, Michelle Matthews of High Point, NC.
Jim graduated from Ragsdale High School in 1963 and Western Carolina University in 1967. He served in the U.S. Army from 1968-1970 with a year service in Vietnam with the Big Red I Infantry and became a member of the VVA, VFW, DAV and the American Legion.
In the mid 1990’s he voluntarily authored a monthly column in the High Point Enterprise named “Vets Corner” offering information for and concerns of veterans in the area. He also was helpful in the promotion and support of “The Walking Wounded”, a Vietnam photograph and memorabilia exhibit founded by Kathy Lucas Benfield.
Visitors may pay their respects from 1-2 pm on Saturday, December 1st at Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home 6000 High Point Rd. Greensboro, NC. A private service will be at Guilford Memorial Park at 2 PM.
The family wishes to thank Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home, Guilford Memorial Park, Randolph County Honor Guard , Bishop Geoff Gentry and the pallbearers Wayne Chisgar, Barry Morrison, Jimmy Benfield, Richard Tadlock, Leon McCrosky and Jason Kiziah for their participation in carrying out the family’s wishes for their loved one.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in Jim's name to the Disabled American Veterans Association, PO Box 28146, Raleigh, NC 27611.
Jim shall be greatly missed by all who knew him and his unique sense of humor, his sensitivity and love of God, his family and his country.
