Jean Miller Umfleet, 96, went home to be with the Lord on December 2, 2024, at Spring Arbor Assisted Living in Greensboro, North Carolina, where she had resided for over two years. Known for her strength, resilience, and dedication, Jean lived a life defined by faith, service, and devotion to her family.
Jean was born on August 5, 1928, in Weaverville, North Carolina, to the late Robert McKinley Miller, Sr., and Ella King Miller. She was the wife of 40 years to the late Cleo Umfleet. She was a longstanding resident of Greensboro and a proud retiree of Western Electric/AT&T, where she worked for 33 years with discipline and integrity.
A long-time member of Lindley Park Baptist Church, Jean took an active role in serving others. She was a committed outreach leader, dedicating her time to calling and sending cards to the sick and shut-ins of her Sunday School class. Her contributions extended far beyond the church walls, as she crocheted hundreds of children’s toboggan hats for church mission programs and always found ways to meet the needs of those around her.
Jean was a woman of many talents. She enjoyed gardening, reading, and cooking for family gatherings, ensuring every meal was made with love. For 25 years, she looked forward to the annual family beach trip to Emerald Isle. There, Jean could often be found on the porch, enjoying her family, capturing fishing triumphs with her camera, or concentrating over multiple puzzles throughout the week.
Jean is survived by her children, Jim Wallen (Pat) of High Point, Ray Wallen (Cathy) of Greensboro, and Ginny “Ginna” Perry (Jim) of Burlington; her stepchildren, Donna Farlow of Lewisburg, WV, Yvonne Hershberger of Greensboro, and Eddie Umfleet (Brenda) of Roanoke, VA; grandchildren, Dana Wallen, Walter Wallen (April), Elaine Livingston (Dusty), Johnny Wallen, Ashley Dennis (Sean), Preston Perry, Jason Umfleet and Danny McNeil; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cleo Umfleet; her parents; her siblings, Frances Head, Lois Wallen, and Robert “Bob” McKinley Miller, Jr.; and her stepchildren, Wayne Umfleet and Anne Buchanan.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Spring Arbor for the compassionate care and support they provided to Jean during the past two years and to Amedisys Hospice for this past year.
A celebration of Jean’s life will be held on Friday, December 6, 2024, with a viewing at 10:30 and the service at 11:00 a.m. at Advantage Funeral Home, 1900 Vanstory St, Greensboro. The family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Jean's name to Amedisys Hospice, 2975 Crouse Lane, Burlington, NC 27215 or a charity of your choice.
