James Mitchel Scott passed away peacefully September 23, 2022 following a brief illness. He leaves behind his wife of 59 years, Sue L. Scott, their five children: Johnathan W. Scott, Gregory A. Scott, Timothy M. Scott, J. Matthew Scott, and daughter S. Michelle Hopkin, their spouses, 24 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. His family is and always was the center of his life and his greatest joy. Born July 13, 1940 to Kenneth L and Mary E. Whittle Scott in Washington, DC. He was educated at George Washington University and did graduate work at the University of Michigan. Mitch was a valiant disciple of Jesus Christ and a life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Most recently he attended the Guilford Ward of the Church on Pinetop Road in Greensboro. He and Sue are grateful for the remarkable church family that embraced them and served them for three decades. As a very young man he served a three year mission for the church to South Texas where he learned to speak Spanish and a life-long love for the peoples of Mexico, Central and South America began. He and Sue served as missionaries for several years following his retirement from Thomasville Industries, Thomasville, NC.
Mitch had a business career that began with Armstrong World Industries in Lancaster, PA where he rose to General Manager directing all their world-wide marketing efforts. In 1992 he and his family relocated to Greensboro when he became Vice President of Marketing for Thomasville Furniture Industries. He was most proud of his efforts to promote many of the young talented women executives at Thomasville to positions of influence and authority in the company. He valued the friendships he developed over many years in his industry.
Mitch and Sue treasured each member of their family. He often lifted others with his clever sense of humor, supportive words of encouragement and reassuring smile. Each member of the family knows deep in their hearts that they were the most important person in the world in their Grandpa’s eyes. His kind voice was often heard reminding those around him how important family relationships are and reassuring us that our family circle is eternal.
Services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 3719 Pinetop Rd. Greensboro. A viewing will be held on Thursday evening October 6th from 6:30-8:00pm. The funeral will be at the same location Friday, October 7th from 11:00-12:00pm.
