Jack Alan Miller, age 74 of Jamestown, NC, passed away peacefully at his home with wife Sue and daughter, Myndie by his side holding him closely after a stoic battle with Bile Duct Cancer (Cholangiocarcinoma) which was diagnosed in October 2022.
Jack grew up in Bedford, PA where he played football for the Mighty Bisons of Bedford High School; graduated from Penn State with a B.A. in Business and Economics (Loved those Nittany Lions!); married his high school sweetheart, Sue (Arnold); pursued a career with State Mutual Life Assurance Company of Worchester, MA and eventually settled in Jamestown, NC after determining he was going to build a company as he envisioned one to be.
Ever the “Reconnoiter”, (a term he learned from his time with the National Guard and PA Reserves as an Advance Infantry man), he and his business partner, “twin Brother” (from different Mamas), Dave Lomax, set about in 1982 to build a company their way. And, boy did they ever! Together and along with Sue, founded and nurtured Penn Western Benefits for the next 35 years during which time they assembled a dedicated team of professionals who to this day remain the “PWB Family”. This family of folks provided advice, guidance, hand holding & expertise to hundreds of companies and those companies’ employees as they navigated the complex world of employee benefits and the health care system.
Jack foremost loved his family and friends, as well as the PWB Family. Happiest was he when surrounded by nature; digging in the soil; laboring in the sunshine; creating beauty in their Jamestown garden or in the gardens at their farm in Bedford. Playing rounds of golf with Sue, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mark and Ann Morgan of Cumberland, MD were among his fondest memories, if not the most humorous. Jack and Sue always considered a perfect day, one which ended after a late afternoon round of golf at Jamestown Park Golf Course, affectionately & with Tongue-in-cheek referred to as Jamestown Country Club (JTCC).
Oh Jack Miller, how you will be missed!!
Left to cherish his memory besides Sue, Myndie, Ann & Mark are sister, Zona Elkins of Fletcher, NC; brother-in-law Don Arnold and fiancée, Janie McMillen of Bedford, PA; the PWB Family; dearest friends and soul mates, Dave & Linda Lomax of Greensboro, NC and Mike & Paula Jackson of Clemmons, NC; friends, neighbors & acquaintances too numerous to list, as well as 12 beloved nieces and nephews of NC, PA, MD, NY & FL.
Jack was predeceased by beloved daughter, Jennifer; parents, Jack and Amanda Miller; In-laws, Dale and Mary Ellen Arnold and sisters, Artie Bortz of Bedford, PA; Sharon Buterbaugh of Holidaysburg, PA and Dee Shimer of Naples, FL.
Sue and Myndie wish to thank the wonderful professionals of Novant’s Derrick L. Davis Cancer Institute for the care and support during these past six months. Dr. An, Dr. Sindram & Sandra Kranzburg, RN, you have been our pillars. Sara Grey, Hospice nurse from Trellis Supportive Care, you brightened our darkest days.
Jack’s final wishes for you would be live life fully with passion & integrity; cherish your family and friends; never hesitate to tell someone you love them; hug freely; Praise God daily for His Blessings and Grace; spread kindness; joy, positivity & generosity all the days of your lives.
A Celebration of this magnificent man’s life will be held at a later date.
