Ila Mae Sawyer Griffin

Greensboro, NC: Mrs. Ila Mae Sawyer Griffin, 99, died March 15, 2014. She was born in Marion, SC and the daughter of the late Stella Lane and Walter Sawyer. She was the last survivor of the 8 siblings.

Mrs. Griffin and her late husband, Hassel, were longtime owners and operators of Griffin Roofing in Greensboro.

She was a very active member of the First Baptist Church as a Sunday school teacher, soloist and choir member. She was extremely involved with her children and the school system which recognized as an honorary life member of the Parent Teachers Association (PTA).

Her son, Joseph Wayne Griffin of NY, NY and daughter, Carolyn Griffin Whedbee of Greensboro; grandchildren David Whedbee, Debbie Allen, Betty Jones, Michael Griffin; and 12 great grandchildren survive her.

The family will visit with friends in the church parlor Saturday from 1 until 1:45 pm and funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church Chapel, followed by burial at Guilford Memorial Park.

A memorial in honor of Ila Mae may be made to the First Baptist Church, 1000 W. Friendly Ave, Greensboro, NC 27403 or to one’s favorite charity.
