Henry Luther Coble II

GREENSBORO -- Henry Luther Coble, 96, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2016 at his residence at Pennybyrn in High Point.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, Jan. 25, 2016, at All Saints Episcopal Church, 4211 Wayne Road, Sedgefield, conducted by The Rev. Kenneth C. Kroohs. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium with military honors provided by the Randolph County Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, Jan. 21, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel, 6000 Gate City Blvd.

Henry was retired after nearly a half-century as a writer and editor at the Greensboro News & Record and its predecessor, the Greensboro Daily News. Early in his professional career, he was also a stringer for Life Magazine. He retired as assistant managing editor, a position he held for nearly three decades. In 1987, he was recipient of the Edward R. Murrow Award for excellence in journalism.

He was born May 29, 1919, in Greensboro, the son of Henry Luther and Virginia Stover Coble. He was a graduate of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and served during WW II as a pilot with the U.S. Army Air Corps. An active churchman all his life, Henry was one of the founding members of All Saints Episcopal Church and served the parish in many leadership positions.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four sons, Henry L. Coble, III, John P. Coble, Paul Anthony “Tony” Coble and Berkley C. Coble; his brother, Jack Coble of New York and a granddaughter, Candice Mashburn Toomes.

Henry was also predeceased by his first wife, the former Marilyn Probst. He later married Ruth Stanford Wilson, who survives along with his two daughters, Penny C. Mashburn and husband Ronny of Franklinville, Nancy C. Stowe and husband Kenneth of Gastonia; daughter-in-law, Gerri K. Coble of Bridgeville, DE; 10 grandchildren, Genie C. Winborne, Cameron C. Lowe, Nicole Daniels, Morgan Coble, Adam Gainey, Heather Lunsford, Zachary Coble, Seth Coble, Meghan Coble, and nine great grandchildren, Deas Winborne, William Lowe, Jessup Lowe, Claire Lowe, Destiny Lunsford, Zebulon Lunsford, Trey Kefauver, Deas Daniels and Taylor Standridge.
