She was born in 1927 in Clarksdale, Mississippi, and her parents were Laurenze Cooper Bouldin and Marshall Jones Bouldin. Helen was a graduate of Clarksdale High School and then attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri for her freshman and sophomore years where she served on the Student Legislature and was chosen as one of the 10 Ideals. She also received her Private Pilot’s Certificate as the college had been preparing women to fly newly manufactured planes to the East Coast during the war. Helen graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1949 where she was the Women’s Orientation Chairwoman, President of the Women’s Honor Council, a member of the Valkyrie Honor Society, and recipient of the Valkyrie Award for Outstanding Woman. She was also a member of the Chi Omega Sorority.
After her marriage to Freeman Randolph Jones in 1949 and moving to Charlotte, NC, she and Freeman enjoyed raising their children and taking part in the community life of the city. During her many years of community service, Helen served as President of the following organizations: the Junior League of Charlotte, The Charlotte Speech and Hearing Center, the Women of First Presbyterian Church, Friends of the Queens College Library and was the Chairwoman of the Steering Committee for The Society of Wing Haven Foundation. Helen was a member of the Colonial Dames of America, First Presbyterian Church, a Sponsor of the Charlotte Debutante Club, a former Trustee for Queens College, and a designated Honorary Alumna in 1980 of Queens College (now Queens University.) Helen and Freeman loved to dance and were members of several dance clubs as well as the Charlotte Country Club and various arts organizations.
Helen took her duties and responsibilities seriously and jumped right into any endeavor she undertook. She also made time for fun and loved her many friends deeply and unconditionally. Helen was an excellent cook and enjoyed entertaining, especially at Cedarvale Farm where she and Freeman lived outside Charlotte for over 26 years. Her sewing skills and needlework were admirable, but out of all of her activities, she loved being with her family the most and especially her 5 grandchildren.
Helen is survived by her son, Freeman Randolph Jones, Jr. (wife Lee) of Greensboro, NC, daughter Lauren Jones Worth (husband David) of Greensboro, NC, grandchildren Freeman Randolph Jones, III (wife Merrick) of Franklin, TN, John Simpson Lucas Jones of Asheville, NC, Holly Jones Fink (husband Brent) of Fort Collins, CO, Alexander McAlister Worth, III (wife Tess) of Greensboro, NC, Marshall Bouldin Worth (wife Valerie) of Raleigh, NC, and great grandchildren Freeman Randolph Jones, IV, Bouldin Wallace Jones, Mason Bouldin Worth, David Harrison Worth, and Preston McAlister Worth. In addition to her parents, Helen was predeceased by her brother, Marshall Bouldin III and his wife Dr. Mary Ellen Bouldin of Clarksdale, MS. The Jones and Worth families would like to thank the incredible care that Helen and Freeman received while living at Well- Spring. The Assisted Living and Memory Care staff were always loving, cheerful, and professional especially during the most stressful time of the pandemic.
