Lee was born to William and Pearl Luffman Simmerson on November 24, 1942 in Lexington NC. He grew up in Linwood, NC and graduated from Guilford College where he played football all four years. He received his Masters in Physical Education from Appalachian State.
After graduation Lee taught and coached high school football in several Wake County schools . Later he worked in sales in Charlotte and in the Health Insurance industry in Louisville, Ky and Greensboro, NC.
Lee’s interests were as diverse as his personality. He loved road trips to the beach, the mountains and Lake Michigan, followed NASCAR, and had a lifelong passion for football and salted peanuts. Lee’s enthusiasm for life was infectious, and he never met a stranger. His gift of connecting with people was remarkable as he could strike up a conversation and create a connection with anyone he chanced to meet. Lee was a kind, compassionate, selfless man who was always ready to help others.
A loyal friend and devoted partner , Lee embodied all that is good in life. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Lee is survived by his partner, Kathy Phillips of Greensboro and her sons, Matt and family of Durham NC, Peter and family of Charlotte NC and Mark and family of Chapel Hill NC, whom he embraced as his own.
He is also survived by his sister, Sandra Goss of Linwood NC, and her extended family.
There will be a Celebration of Life at 2:00 on Saturday,September 30th at Hanes Lineberry N. Elm Chapel, 515 N. Elm St, Greensboro NC.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers donations be made in Lee’s memory to Guilford College Athletic program ( guilfordquakers.com) or to the charity of your choice.
