George Hayes Wakefield

GREENSBORO: George Hayes Wakefield, 76, died Thursday, March 10, 2011 at Wesley Long Community Hospital in Greensboro, NC.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00pm March 12, 2011 at the Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home-Vanstory Chapel. Interment will follow in Guilford Memorial Park.

Mr. Wakefield was born in Greensboro, NC on December 17, 1934, the son of George Jr. and Lena Hilliard Wakefield. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Ruth Allison Wakefield Eckelmann. He is survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Patricia Grubb Wakefield, and a sister, Anne Wakefield Callicott. Survivors also include nephew, Wayne Allison Eckelmann of Holly Springs, PA and nieces, Allison Callicott Ortlip and husband Michael, of Charlotte, NC, Karen Eckelmann Proffitt and husband Alan of Raleigh, NC and Lynn Callicott Baranski and husband Marc of Princeton, NJ. He is also survived by five great nephews, Joel Kaschner Eckelmann, Michael Justin Ortlip, Jr., Scott Callicott Ortlip, Robert Gerhardt Proffitt and Marc Hensel Baranski, Jr. and two great nieces, Sarah Allison Proffitt and Josephine Lynn Baranski.

George graduated from Sumner High School. He worked most of his life as a general contractor. He served in the US Army attached to the Headquarters Battery, Nike Missile Battalion at Fairchild AFB in Spokane, Washington. He enjoyed flying, sailing, golf, tennis and music, particularly classical piano. George was a person who could do “almost anything.” He appreciated life and protected it in all forms. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

The family will receive friends from 7 pm to 9 pm on Friday March 11, 2011 at the Hanes Lineberry Vanstory Chapel.
