George Washington Pegram, 89, of Greensboro died Sunday November 4, 2012 at Wesley Long Hospital. Mr. Pegram was born August 20, 1923 in Forsyth Co., the son of James Edward and Myrtle Permelia Clark Pegram. He was married to Evelyn L. Hinkley (Rogers) who preceded him in death in 2008. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Edward Pegram and a half-brother, William A. Cox.
He is survived by his step-daughter, Sherry Grimes and husband Rick, step-grandchildren Brandon Grimes of Kernersville and Jeremy Whitley of New York.
Mr. Pegram graduated from Walkertown High School where he played basketball, football and baseball. He was drafted after school and served in the U.S. Army; 19th Division, 47th Regiment in Europe. After service he signed with the Boston Red Sox and took spring training with the Durham Bulls and was assigned to Tarboro, NC where he played one season. He worked for Hanes Corp. and played baseball with the Hanes Knitters. He was later drafted by the Pittsburg Pirates and was assigned to Tallahassee, Fl where he played one season. He then came back to the Hanes Corp. where he worked until retiring as foreman of the knitting dept. While working at Hanes, he coached Little League in Winston-Salem.
Graveside services with Military Honors provided by the Randolph Co. Honor Guard will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Guilford Memorial Park conducted by Chaplain Richard Payne.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Human Society of the donor’s choice.
