He was the son of the late Frederick Thomas Jones, Sr., and Ellen Dunivant Jones and was a lifelong citizen of Greensboro where he was surrounded by a large family of Jones and Dunivant aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his younger brother Robert Neil Jones (Nancy) and his sister-in-law Anne Lane Edwards. He graduated from Greensboro Senior High School in 1951 where he played tuba in the band, and earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Guilford College in 1955.
His military service included United States Army Intelligence and National Guard during the height of the Cold War.
A longtime senior administrator of Greensboro College, he served as business manager-treasurer, then vice president for development and public relations and briefly as interim president. He joined the Board of Trustees in 2010 and was named a Lifetime Trustee. He worked parttime for the US Office of Personnel Management well into his 80s.
He served his community in various leadership roles including board president of Greensboro Historical Museum, Better Business Bureau of Central NC, and Greensboro Civitan Club, and on the boards of the General Greene Boy Scout Council, Chamber of Commerce, Council on Downtown Development, and Friends Homes. He was recognized with awards for Excellence in Business Ethics and as a Triad Achiever.
He was a member of West Market Street United Methodist Church where he was christened in 1933. He served on the administrative board, worship and endowment committees, and was instrumental in establishing the church’s columbarium where he will be inurned. He was a Sunday School Teacher, lay reader, chancel choir member and soloist.
Fred loved his family, country, hometown, church, education, music and sharing a good joke. He was a steadfast friend and enjoyed meeting his high school classmates for breakfast well into his 90th year.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 66 years Gene Farrow Edwards Jones, daughter Anne Moir Jones Hurd (John), and son Frederick Thomas Jones, III (Carolyn); granddaughters Kelly Young (Jeremy), Anna Grabmeier (James), and Molly Hurd (Eric Lorenz); great-grandchildren, Zoey and Hallie Young, and Jack and Milo Grabmeier; nieces Mandy Whitaker (Victor), Timi Jean Meyer (Ken), Mary Ellen Whitworth (Tim), and Beth Craft (Rick), their children and families Shannon Roach, Lane Meyer, Kristen Michaels, Grace Brouillard and Nathan Nelson.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 3, at 2:00 p.m. at West Market Street United Methodist Church, 302 West Market Street, with visitation afterwards in The Gathering Space.
