Mrs. Eloise Levan Wicker Gaines, 85, went to be with her Lord and Savior on December 21, 2015. She was at her residence in the company of her family who loved her dearly. A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held at Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm chapel on Sunday, December 27 at 2 PM with interment to follow at Lakeview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 PM on Saturday December 26 at the funeral home.
Eloise was one of fourteen children born in Yadkin County to Robert and Omie Adams Levan. Her parents and twelve of her siblings preceded her in death. She was married to Henry C. Wicker in 1945 and they celebrated 38 years together until his death in 1983. Eloise was a woman who loved Christ first and then her family. She doted on her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She took great pride in caring for her family and could do just about anything related to keeping a home. German chocolate and coconut cakes were her baking specialty but then again, Granny’s soups and biscuits were delicious too. When Eloise is remembered surely Proverbs 31:10-31 will come to mind for her family as she truly was a virtuous woman who lovingly sewed, knitted and crocheted for her family. She loved to play the piano and particularly enjoyed gospel music. Whatever the question, Eloise’s answer was usually “Oh yeah!” accompanied by her familiar and sweet smile. She married Roy E. Gaines Jr. and for the past 30 years they have enjoyed one another’s company especially when they loaded up the RV and hit the road for travel. She was employed by Lorillard Tobacco for thirty three years until her retirement. She and Roy have been members of Sure Foundation Baptist Church since 2003.
She is survived by her husband, Roy E. Gaines, Jr., of Climax; sons and their spouses, Robert W. and Shelia Wicker of Reidsville and Henry C. and Nancy Wicker of McLeansville; grandchildren (and their spouses), Bruce (Donna) Wicker, Teresa (Chuck) Barham, Robert W. Wicker, Jr., Tonya (Michael) Williams, Henry C. Wicker, Jr., Katie (Brian) Howell, and Brian Wicker; great grandchildren, Hayden, Ryan, Austin, Lauren, Meagan, Courtney, Emma and Charlotte Wicker, Taylor and Breanna Barham, Logan and Lane Swaim, and Katelyn and Noah Howell; sister, Jackie (Paul) Ratliffe; sister-in-law, Beatrice Levan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family extends their appreciation to Hospice of Greensboro for their tender care during Eloise’s illness. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Sure Foundation Baptist Church, 215 NC-62, Randleman, NC 27317 or to Hospice of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405.
