A cryptside service will be held on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at Alamance Memorial Park Mausoleum at 2 p.m. with Dr. Paul Luttrell officiating.
Ed was born in Durham on November 9, 1935 to the late Willie and Iola Strickland Howell. He worked at Duke Power, American Can Company before retiring from Miller Brewery in 1997 after 20 years of service.
He attended Gospel Baptist Church. He was a diehard Tar Heel fan, and he loved music, dancing and fishing, his dog's Sparky, Spike, Spikey and Lady and working in the yard.
He was preceded in death by his parents and stepmother, Mamie Pope Howell who raised him; sisters, Leota Fowler and Laverne Guthrie and brother, Ellis Howell.
Ed is survived by his wife of 48 years, Shirley Wray Howell; children, Randall Lee Howell of High Point, and Jeff Mueller and wife Beth of Greensboro; grandchildren, Logan and Britton Howell; sisters, Ann Harrison of Florence, SC, Colleen H. Howell, Peggie Rorie and Nadine Howell all of Greensboro; brother, Gene O. Howell of Oakton, VA
The family would like to thank the staff of Beacon Place for the care given to Ed during his illness.
The family will visit with friends on Monday, December 27, 2010 at Hanes Lineberry N. Elm Chapel from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m..
