Douglas “Doug” Wayne Smith was 69 years old and went to be with the Lord Sunday, November 17 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital after a long-fought battle with Congestive Heart Failure. There will be a memorial service Monday, November 25th at 6pm and a fellowship time immediately following also at the funeral home. There will be no gathering at the home afterwards.
Doug was born to Paul Douglas Smith and Mae Lucille Stewart in Pontiac, Michigan and moved to McLeansville as a young child.
Doug worked for Ansco & Associates for years until he retired. He worked in the field as a crewman and a foreman before moving into management. Doug was an avid lover of fishing, camping, the beach, and bluegrass music. He loved attending festivals, camping, and beach trips with his wife, Shirley. Doug was well known in the bluegrass community for his talent playing the harmonica, guitar, and the upright base (the doghouse). Over the years he played in several bluegrass and gospel bands. Music was his passion and he loved every minute.
Doug & Shirley had recently joined Pineland Street Gospel Church in Greensboro. Doug loved the Lord and His Babydoll (Shirley). He had the ability to put a smile on anyone’s face and he had a nickname for everyone. He had a heart of gold, was a loyal friend, and would always be there any time a friend needed anything. Doug will be dearly missed and remembered by all that had the honor of knowing him.
Doug was preceded in death by his father, Paul Douglas Smith; his mother, Mae Lucille Stewart; and his sister Diane Wilson. He was survived by his wife, Shirley Smith; children, Wayne Smith (Michelle), Mike Edwards (Jennifer), and Dana Stone (Danny); 7 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.
