A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 27th at Glenwood United Methodist Church with The Reverend Carol Williams-Gilbert and The Reverend Caren Gobel officiating. Burial will follow at Westminster Gardens Mausoleum.
Charles was the eldest son of four boys born to Charles Purvis and Notra McCollum Williams of the Glenwood neighborhood. Charles is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, K. Kenneth Williams and Robert Walker Williams. Charles was born May 16, 1920 in Rockingham County and celebrated his 90th birthday with a big party.
Charles was married to Lucile Garner in June, 1942 and celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary before Lucile’s death. Lucile and Charles were life-long members of the Glenwood United Methodist Church and were active in the annual Brunswick Stew.
Charles was a graduate of the Greensboro Senior High School. He began his business career at his father’s store on Grove Street in Glenwood, and was an official Guilford Dairy Man when the plant was on West Market Street. Charles had a television repair business and received the TV’s for the Cone Hospital system. Charles and Lucile managed the Coffee Shop at the Wesley Long Community Hospital and served many white ceramic mugs of coffee to doctors and nurses on staff. Charles loved new cars and kitty cats and always had a smile on his face.
Charles is survived by his younger brother, John Philip (Phil) Williams of Friends Homes Guilford, and two nieces, Rev. Carol Williams-Gilbert (George) and Susan Poole (David) and one great niece and four great nephews. A special thanks to Lucile’s nephews and nieces (Jerry and Anne Haywood) for their loving care. Lucile and Charles’ extended family are Randy and Susan Jorgensen of Virginia and their sons, Michael and Stephen, and neighbors Jim and JoAnn Cox of Avery Place.
The family will receive friends Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the parlor of Glenwood United Methodist Church.
