Dick was born in Greensboro on January 11, 1923 to the late Wiley (Pop) and Ina Andrews. He graduated from Curry High School. He was saved at age 17 and started serving the Lord as the primary focus of his life. He was involved at Forest Avenue Tabernacle which then became Shannon Hills Bible Chapel. He served as song leader, Sunday School Superintendent and as an Elder for over 60 years. His late wife Judy served by his side and supported his ministry. Dick was instrumental in leading and starting camps and conferences that today exist as Mountain Top Youth Camp and Skyland Bible Conference.
Dick enjoyed a 48 year career at Pilot Life Insurance Company and Jefferson-Pilot. He started at age 17 working in the mail room. At age 24, he started the Public Relations department with a focus on advertising. As a result of the 1957 UNC basketball championship, he had the vision of Pilot Life sponsoring ACC basketball on TV. He was a pioneer of sports advertising in TV. The “Sail with the Pilot” theme song became very well-known and famous. Later he grew the sports advertising to include the SEC conference as well. As successful as his work career was, his main goal in the workplace was to represent Jesus Christ and live out his faith.
He is survived by his sons, Chuck (Cathy) and Steve (Kim) and grandchildren, Melissa, Philip, Bethany, Blaine, Brooke, Thomas and Meredith as well as recent great grandchildren, Harper, Madeline and Thomas. He is also survived by his youngest sister, Nancy Smith.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at Shannon Hills Bible Chapel at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, July 16th followed by a time of visitation with the family in the fellowship hall.
If you desire to honor Dick’s memory, then we request memorials be sent to Mountain Top Youth Camp, 1460 Mackay Lane, Pinnacle, NC 27043.
