Loving wife, wonderful mother and precious grandmother, Bette Tilley Hill, 79, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Thursday, February 15, 2018. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be at 2 PM Sunday, February 18 at Christ United Methodist Church, officiated by Reverend Mark Vickers. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall.
Bette was born in Cana, VA to the late Carl and Josephine Worrell Tilley. She met her life partner, Lester Hill, while both were students at Mt. Airy High School and celebrated 59 wonderful years of marriage. Bette attended Woman’s College (UNC-G) in the commercial course curriculum, a program designed to prepare women for a career in office administration. She worked briefly away from home when first married but three children and a maintaining a loving home was her true calling. Bette was a supportive wife and a caring and involved mother. Her other passions were volunteering and serving her community. For almost fifty years she was a faithful and active member of Christ United Methodist Church where she was past president of the United Methodist Women, participated in the women’s circle, was instrumental in forming the successful Pathways Ministry at Christ Church, and delivered meals to the homebound through Mobile Meals. Bette was a member of the Greensboro Country Club and a life member of the Greensboro Jaycette’s.
Bette was a superb athlete and a gifted tennis player. She relaxed in her outside craft studio where she scrap booked and designed various crafts as decorations and gifts. Making friends and maintaining life-long friendships came easy to Bette as she was a vivacious and outgoing spirit who laughed easily and was a skillful conversationalist. She loved retail therapy, Christmas, working outside and was an adept bridge player. Bette was very content to walk along the beach at their home in Sunset Beach and was a fierce Wake Forest fan.
She will be remembered by her husband, Lester Hill of the home; children and their spouses, Viki Hill Matthews (Chris), Joe Hill (Celeste) and Jeff Hill (Lisa) all of Greensboro; grandchildren, Mariah Cooke, Staci Coble, Avery Hill, Jackson Hill, Mary Myers Hill, and Wynnan Hill; great grandchild, Alec McCurdy; sister, Josephine Simmons of Mt. Airy; several nieces and nephews; and her beloved canine companion, DJ. In addition to her parents Bette is preceded in death by five siblings.
