Barbara Slade Johnson, 78, was born on April 24, 1945 in Alexandria, VA to Rev. Hubert & Della Cotton Slade. She had two siblings, one of which preceded her in death (Betty Slade Jeter). After a lengthy illness, she transitioned into peaceful rest on Thursday, June 8, 2023 at Wesley Long Hospital in Greensboro, NC.
Barbara was educated at N.C. A&T State University in Greensboro, NC where she majored in English & Drama. She was an artist and loved all forms of art, including the performing arts. She was an avid reader and she loved to create with her words and her hands. In her spare time she wrote poetry, books & published newsletters. She also loved to sculpt, paint and make jewelry.

Barbara loved spending time with family & friends. She was a loving and caring person, devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Always thinking of others. “To know her was to love her.”
Barbara leaves to cherish her loving memory her two Daughters, Angela Chabwera (Durelle) and Kimberly Griffin (Jarees); one Sister, Rhetta Reid (Cecil); four Grandchildren, Mark Scales, Moneika Scales, Joshua Williams & Joel Ellington, Jr.; eight Great grandchildren, Auriel Scales, Nakiah Croom, Azavier Scales, Terry Croom Jr., Terryan Croom, Ameer Scales, Lendon Scales & Mikayla Scales; three Great-great Grandchildren, Ziya Dowdy, Miciah Davis & Jaxen Dowdel; three Nieces, Ramona Garland (Kedrick), Leigh Lester, Sherri Burns (Ritchee); one Nephew, Charles Slade; four Great Nieces, April Turner (Ithiel), Jennifer Slade, Harmony Slade, Eternity Slade; four Great Nephews, Kedrick Garland Jr., (Shelby), Isaac Courts, Ilai Courts, Sir Charles Slade; one Great-great Niece, Justice Blackwell; five Great-great Nephews, Josiah Turner, Noah Turner, Jamieson Turner and Isaac Courts Jr., Christen Slade; and a host of cousins and friends.
Throughout Barbara’s life, she expressed her desire for a celebration when she transitioned. She didn’t want family and friends to mourn for her, but to remember her and rejoice in her restful peace.
