Rev. Fillers was former pastor of Calvary Baptist Church for 34 years before retiring at age 86. He loved his church and everyone around him. He did many funerals as well as weddings and was always a pleasure to meet. He treated everyone like family, even any stranger. He will be sadly missed.
He was a veteran of World War II having served with the 101st Airborne Glider Division and the 82nd Airborne. He served over ten years of active military duty. He did two glider missions, one in the Normandy Invasion and another in the invasion of Holland. He also served in the Battle of the Bulge.
Survivors include four sons: Kenneth W. Fillers, Bobby G. Fillers, Richard Scott Fillers and fiancé, Faye Shelton, and Steve M. Fillers;
twelve grandchildren: Melissa Hughes of Ocala, FL, Shawna Masten of Alabama, Olivia “Libby” Fillers, Bobby Keith Fillers, Bobby Gene Fillers, Jr., Anthony Fillers, Doug Fillers, Donika Firth, Andrea Fillers, Taylor Fillers, Haleigh Fillers and his “special buddy grandson”, Jeffery Dixon, who lived with him since the age of one; eighteen great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Florence Patricia Fillers, a daughter, Lisa Fillers, and infant son, Johnny Fillers, four brothers, Dwight, Otis, Edgar and Ivan Fillers, two sisters, Rosie Ricker and Robbie Morgan.
The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home and 12-2 p.m. Thursday at Calvary Baptist Church preceding the service.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 28, 2013, at Calvary Baptist Church. Rev. Rocky Johnson and Rev. Charles Morgan will officiate.
Interment will follow at Harris Memorial Cemetery. The Greene County Honor Guard and the Tennessee National Guard will conduct a military graveside service.
Pallbearers will be Jeffery Dixon, Lynn Johnson, Bobby G. Fillers, Clay Dunaway, Bobby Keith Fillers, Doug Fillers and Jordon Fillers.
Members of Calvary Baptist Church, staff of Laughlin Home Health, the ER staff as well as the staff of 3rd and 4th floors at Laughlin Memorial Hospital, Dr. Thomas Beckner and his nurse, Allison, whom he thought a lot of, Dr. Steven Prince, Dr. Rodney Holliday, Dr. Mandeep Bakshi and Dr. Stephen Flohr will serve as honorary pallbearers.
