Lowell Hadley Carter of Greeneville, TN, passed away peacefully at home on July 22, 2024, at age 87. His spirit was released, and he entered fully into the presence of the Lord. While he will be greatly missed, his family is thankful that he is with the Lord.
Hadley was a faithful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who loved the Lord and his family. His favorite Bible verse was John 14:6 “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
Hadley was the last of ten children born to Alfred Pogue (A. P.) Carter and Nannie Clyde Carter on November 23, 1936. Hadley grew up in the Carter’s Station community in Mosheim, Tennessee. He became an Eagle Scout in 1952, and he was the recipient of the God and Country award, which emphasizes a Scout’s reverence toward God and their commitment to religious duties. He graduated from Mosheim High School in 1954, where he was a standout basketball player.
After High School, Hadley moved to Rockford, Illinois, where he worked before returning to Tennessee. In 1960, Hadley completed a course in auctioning at the Fort Smith Auction School, in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He was employed by Davis Realty Company at the time. Later that year, Hadley began working at Greeneville Auction & Sales Company.
Hadley was later employed by Greeneville Development Company from 1961 to 1963. He then became a partner in Doyle Broyles Realty for 3 years. In 1966, Hadley joined his brother Grady, who owned Grady Carter Realty, and the two formed Carter Brothers Real Estate and Auction Company. Hadley worked with his brother Grady, his sisters Dora Carter Harmon, and Erlene Johnson, his nephew, John Carter, his niece Wendy Carter Warner, Gary Carter, and his son, Shane Carter until the mid-1990s. Hadley and his nephew, John Carter, then formed Carter Realty and Auction Company, where he worked until 2002, when he placed his license in retired status. Next, Hadley worked with his sons, Shane and Gale, to form the Brother’s Real Estate and Auction Company from 2004 until 2014.
Over Hadley’s 54 year career in real estate and auction, he subdivided many farms into thousands of tracts and auctioned hundreds of properties throughout Greene County and the surrounding areas.
On May 1, 1954, Hadley borrowed $35 from his brother, Ted, and married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Pierce. They had 3 children, Belinda, Gale, and Shane. Hadley enjoyed singing, traveling, golfing, reading the Bible, and spending time with family and friends.
Hadley attended both Encompass Church in Mohawk, TN, and Carter’s Station Meeting House, in Mosheim, TN.
He enjoyed watching his son, Shane Carter, sing and play the guitar as part of the worship team at Encompass Church, and Carter’s Station Meeting House held a special place in his heart as it was his childhood family church. Over the years, Hadley taught several Sunday School classes and sang in the choir.
He was preceded in death by his parents, A. P. and Nannie Carter, five brothers, Herschel, Mac Olin, Ted, Billie Joe, and Grady Carter, and four sisters, Sue Poindexter, Erlene Johnson, Lynnis Stubblefield, and Dora Carter Harmon.
He is survived his wife of 70 years, Shirley Pierce Carter, one daughter and son-in-law, Belinda and Ronnie Cansler, two sons and daughters-in-law, Gale and Sharon Carter, and Shane and Lorri Carter, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, from 2 to 4 pm and 5 to 7 pm at Kiser Rose Hill funeral home in Greeneville. The service will follow the visitation at 7 pm. Jesse Bible will be the presiding minister. Interment will be at the Brown Springs Cemetery in Mosheim at 10 am on Thursday, July 25, 2024.
