Mr. Painter was a retired salesman for Summers Hardware and JanPak.
He was a lifelong member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School for 50+ years and was a member of the choir.
He was a charter member of Nolichuckey Valley Volunteer Fire Department, where he currently served on the Board of Directors; charter member of the South Central Ruritan Club; and a member of the Washington County Tax Equalization Board.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years: JoAnn Painter; daughter and son-in-law: Lisa Lady Broyles and Dr. Robert R. Broyles III of Chuckey; three sons and two daughters-in-law: L. Allen and Robin Painter of Chuckey, Jonathan R. and Susan Painter of Gray, and Steven L. Painter of Chuckey; grandchildren: Amber Painter Garmer and husband Tommy of Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Elizabeth Painter, Jaclyn Painter, and Meghan Painter, all of Gray, Jarrod Painter, Jameson Painter, and Jeremy Painter, all of Chuckey, Seth Lady of Johnson City, and Drew Lady of Chuckey; two sisters: Louise Cansler Bailey and husband Jakie Bailey of Johnson City and Evelyn June Ellis of Knoxville; like a brother: Virgil Lee Dunbar of Chuckey; two sisters-in-law: Earnestine France and husband Jim of Jonesborough and Reba Thompson of Chuckey; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Macie Watts and a brother-in-law, John Wesley Thompson.
The family will receive friends from 1pm-6pm Sunday at Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home and 2:30pm-4:30pm Monday at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church.
Following visitation, the funeral service will be held at 5pm Monday, April 29, 2013, at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church with Rev. Rance Edwards and Daniel Belcher officiating.
Interment will follow in Liberty Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Allen, Johnny, and Steven Painter, Robert Broyles, Jarrod, Jameson, and Jeremy Painter, Seth and Drew Lady, Virgil Lee Dunbar, and Don Jennings.
Honorary pallbearers will be Raymond and Sandra Smith, Terry Leonard, Sonny Marsh, James Emory, Pat Wolfe, George Jaynes, Jim Mitchell, Eula Saults, Vestal Watts, Bill Mathes, Lavern Bailey, Roger Painter, Kevin Thompson, David France, Nan Greer, Rev. Amos Penley, Melvin Saults, Josh Belcher, Thomas Garland Sr., Thomas Garland Jr., and the Men and Women’s Sunday School Class at Mt. Carmel UM Church.
